The phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" is the most inaccurate guide for an author to go by. The truth is, people do judge books by their cover, and for very good reason. The cover is the first point of contact with the reader. A boring cover suggests a boring book, and although we have all had the surprising fortune of reading a great book that had a poor cover, this is certainly not the normal experience.
Books have only a few seconds to grab the attention of a potential buyer. A great cover does this, as well as using the right marketing techniques that lead to sales.
For many people, the cover is the only part of your book they will see, and that is why it is imperative to have the best possible design.
